Calistoga: Great spas, great wine and great food

When most people first think of Calistoga they think hot springs, cool wine and warm welcome (according to Visit Calistoga). I totally agree. I am also not surprised that Trip Advisor’s 2010 Traveler’s Choice Destination Awards ranked Calistoga #6 in the Top Ten Relaxation and Spa Destinations in the U.S. In fact if you are looking for hot springs then Calistoga might be your first choice.

Calistoga is situated at the end of the beautiful Napa Valley. Despite development in the Napa Valley Calistoga still has maintained a charming small town atmosphere. It is this relaxed feeling that I find inviting. It is one of these special places where you can totally relax. During the last twenty years I have visited Calistoga on quite a few occasions. There are more than two-dozen spas and massage therapy salons to choose from in Calistoga. Each visit I try one of the spa packages and I have always felt pleased with the overall level o f the service. The price of most spa packages is reasonably priced. I think that is important because a weekend in the Napa Valley with spa treatments, accommodations, food and wine tasting can add up quickly.

During our September 23-25 visit we tried Golden Haven Spa and Resort and Indian Springs Resort and Spa.

While Calistoga is not quite as well know for its restaurants as other towns in Napa Valley you will find a good selection of restaurants along its main street, Lincoln Avenue. Of course if you like exploring Napa Valley there are many wonderful restaurants. One of my favorites is the Culinary Institute of America Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant  in St. Helena, which is only miles from Calistoga. We dropped by for lunch on September 23rd.

December 2009 Calistoga was acknowledged as an official Napa Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area).  Calistoga is quite happy because a Calistoga Wine label now ensures its official status.

Calistoga is great for spa getaway. You can totally relax and of course you have all the wonderful the Napa Valley wineries to explore if you choose. During our visit to Calistoga we did manage to visit Vermeil Wines & On ThEdge Winery, one of the tasting rooms on Lincoln Avenue.
