Dinning on the Upper Sunshine Coast, British Columbia

I have visited the Upper Sunshine Coast often in the last five years and have come to know the region quite well. Apart from the Sunshine Coast being one of Canada’s most temperate climates the natural beauty of British Columbia’s Coastal Mountains and Pacific Ocean draws outdoor enthusiasts from around the world.

If you are planning a trip to the Powell River area here are three eateries with great views that you may not want to miss.

A fabulous place to dine out is the Laughing Oyster. While it is approximately a one-hour north of Powell River on Okeover Inlet it is well worth the drive.  I am a vegetarian who eats neither meat nor seafood and owner/chief Dave has often cooked me a wonderful vegetarian dish not on the menu. It is fabulous for dinner and great for a relaxing lunch.

Shinglemill Restaurant is built on a historic lumber mill site on Powell Lake, which makes it a great setting to dine any time of the year. It has a relaxed sports bar type atmosphere with fair to good food. It is great for lunch or dinner. The menu has a few vegetarian options.

Savory Bight is a seaside restaurant and pub located in the Beach Gardens and Resort. It has a great setting with fair to good food. A great choice for lunch or dinner. There are a few vegetarian options on the menu. You can watch the boats go by, or if you are really lucky you might just see whales swim by.

If you want some casual dinning or want to order in some food two local tasty options in Powell River are the Gourmet Canton (Chinese food) and the Paparazzi (pizza). Both have good vegetarian options.

I f you happen to venture to Lund, the gateway to Desolation Sound there are a few places with great views you might like to try. The Boardwalk Restaurant and the Historic Lund Hotel Restaurant are both right at the ocean’s edge. Nancy’s Bakery is another popular stop for folks visiting for the day and boaters heading up to beautiful Desolation Sound. It’s a great place for boaters and non-boaters to have coffee or tea with one of their bakery items, or light lunch.

To get to Powell River from Vancouver you will need to take two ferries and drive two stretches of scenic highway or take a ferry from Comox on Vancouver Island (for further details see BC Ferries).  See suggestions on things to do and see in the Powell River area.
