Castoro Cellars Winery

Paso Robles American Viticulture Area (AVA) in San Luis Obispo County was established in 1983. There are over 200 wineries in this appellation. I have chosen to write about Castoro Cellars Winery, Templeton because it is one of my favorites in Paso Robles Wine Country. Castoro Cellars is high on my list due to the fact that it consistently produces good wines. It is a California winery which, uses sustainable agriculture in the production of its wine. It also produces over 75 acres of "organic certified" wine.

Friday, December 10, 2010 we visited the Castro Winery just before closing. The winery was busy so we had a brief wait before wine tasting.

During my December visit I tasted the following wines.
  1. Barbera Reserve 2006
  2. Tempranillo 2006
  3. Malbec Reserve 2006
  4. Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2005
  5. Venti Cinque Anni 2006
  6. Due Mila Sette 2005
  7. Zinfusion Zinfandel 2007
While I thought all the wines I tasted were good, I particularly liked the Tempranillo 2006, Due Mila Sette 2005 and  Zinfusion Zinfandel 2007.

Both the Tempranillo 2006 and the Zinfusion 2007 were smooth on the pallet. The Due Mila Sette 2005 however, had a refined finish on the pallet and a nose with hints of blackberries, black currents, chocolate and cedar. Castoro Cellars has definitely got this blend right!

After the wine tasting we had a pleasant encounter as we walked back to our car. Guess who we just happened to meet?

Reviews by Tripadvisor (four stars), Insider  (five stars) and Yelp (four stars) give Castoro Cellars a strong overall four star rating. Snooth has ratings of some Castoro wines posted online. The California Winery Advisor is a great source for overall information on California wineries.

We enjoyed our visit to Castoro Cellars. The wine server was quite pleasant and knowledgeable. She worked hard to accommodate our tasting requests.

  1. Thanks for the recommendation. We stopped there earlier this month and Joan purchased some Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Zinfandel 2006, and Muscat Canelli 2005. Don’t know if those are their best wines, but they are available in half bottles.
