Dulces, mas dulces por favor: La Antigua Sweets

No visit to La Antigua, Guatemala is complete without checking out the local sweets (dulces tipicos). Antigua is well known for its dulces (sweets). These sweets are made from local fruits that are mixed with ingredients like cocoanut, seeds, nuts and sweetners such as, honey, condensed milk and traditional sweetners. There is a taste for everyone.

There are a number of Dulcerias in Antigua where you can shop for sweets. One of the best know is Doña  María Gordillo's Dulces Tipicos. It is located on 4a Calle Oriente #11.

Doña María Gordillo is the largest candy shop in town that sells "dulces tipicos". If you have just a little knowledge of Spanish then you know Doña Maria "Gordillo" is the perfect name for a sweet shop.

Then there is Tradiciones on 5a Calle Poniente.

Tradiciones sells dulces tipicos and artesan products like owls and other pottery. The significance of the owl (tecolote) is that they are suppose to bring good luck. Many people like to have at least one tecolote in their house. They can also be used as piggy banks.

There are however other Dulcerias, such as El Sombrerón's Dulces Tipicos. It has two locations in Antigua (4a Calle Oriente #31 and 4a Calle Poniente #11).
