Travels through Belize: From the Mexican Border to the Guatemalan Border

Crossing into Belize from Mexico
We entered into Belize near Chetumal, Quintana Roo at Subteniente López - St. Elena,  9 miles north of Corazol Town, Belize. Drive the Americas describes the process for entering/exiting Belize with an automobile. Belize is the northern most country in Central America.

The border crossing into Belize went smoothly and soon we were driving down the highway of Northern Belize (see images) to Belize City.

In Belize there are no more signs for topes (giant speed bumps) but there are signs bumps. You still need to slow down to avoid sending your car flying through the air.

Then further along the highway we cross a number of bridges before arriving at Belize City.

Whoops, soon we are driving through Belize City. We spent a week in Belize City at a conference a number of years ago; so we do not feel the need to stop this time. Besides, we need to be in Guatemala.

What we remember most from prior visits to Belize is visiting Ambergris Caye and the keys off shore. The Belizean keys are wonderful and we need to return soon.

Soon we are heading down the highway towards Belmopan, capital of Belize.  After a long day's drive from Playa Del Carmen, Mexico we stop at the Hotel Orange, just outside St. Ignacio for the night. We check-in, get caught up on email and have dinner. Next morning, we are the road to the border to cross into Guatemala. Here are a few photos from the Cayo District, where drive through lots of farmland.

Crossing into Guatemala
Soon we arrived at the Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize/ Mechor de Mencros, Guatemala border and we cross into Guatemala. Both exiting Belize and entering Guatemala went smoothly. From Mechor de Mencros we drive onto Antigua, Guatemala. There we will complete our drive from California to Antigua, Guatemala.
