Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery, Paso Robles AVA

It is June and Spaswinefood continues the search for greener wineries around El Paso de Robles, California. At the top of my list this time is Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery, a SIP Certified winery. Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery located at 5036 South El Pomar, Templeton uses sustainable agriculture practices that meet requirements to be Sustainability in Practice Certified (SIP Certified).  Pomar Junction's impressive vineyards are certainly captivating Paso Robles Wine Country landscape.  Paso Robles American Viticulture Area (AVA) is California's third largest and fastest growing wine region. Given there are over 200 wineries in this appellation, it is important to note that Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery is one of a short list of SIP Certified wineries in the AVA (see lastest update on SIP wineries).

Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery is a family owned and operated winery, founded by the Merrill Family in 2002. The Merrill's have been involved in agriculture and grape growing for over eight generations. At the vineyards you will find an inviting farmhouse tasting room with excellent service. Near the tasting room you will find an historic cupola caboose with a boxcar. While at the winery you can enjoy a picnic in the vineyard while taking in the beautiful sweeping vineyard views. Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery is also a popular wedding venue.

Jim Shumate, wine maker joined Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery in 2011. Shumate brings to Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery an impressive resume.  I plan to be on the lookout for the new releases. Pomar's Wine list of reds includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and two red wine blends Red Booster and Train Wreck; the whites includes Chadonnay and Viognier. When I dropped by I got to taste these plus a 2011 Syrah Rosé (one of Jim's first releases). I must admit I rather like this Rosé.

Cuisineist's article provides a good description of the wine making/grape growing tradition at Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery. There is no doubt that the vineyards reflect the Merrill family's commitment to this tradition. Drop by for a picnic and check out Pomar Junction Vineyards and Winery SIP Certified wines.
