An highlight of any Spaswinefood adventure to Sierra Foothills Wine Country is to do wine tasting in the Sutter Creek area. Sutter Creek, the jewel of Gold Country, has four wine tasting rooms right on Main Street. Sutter Creek is also a perfect place to begin, or stopover while touring Sierra Foothills Wine Country. You will not only find tasting rooms in Sutter Creek but there are also wineries nearby.

Sutter Creek Tasting Room
Sutter Creek Tasting Room at 85 Main Street offers wines from three wineries (Gold Hill Vineyard, Le Mulet Rouge Vineyard and Winery and Sierra Ridge Vineyard and Winery). While the Sierra Foothills AVA is known for its Zinfandels you will also find plenty of other exciting wines to taste. Here is a brief overview of each winery and a few of the wines we tasted during our visit:
Gold Hill Vineyard
Gold Hill Vineyard at 5660 Vineyard Lane, Placerville produces small productions of award winning wines, using only estate grown grapes. It is also known for hosting special events, such as weddings. Here are a few of Gold Hill wines we tasted:
Le Mulet Rouge Vineyard and Winery
Le Mulet Rouge Vineyard and Winery at 16915 Red Mule Road, Fiddletown in Amador County has a mission is to create outstanding estate wines through sustainable grape growing practices. It was a treat to sample some of its wines at the Sutter Creek Tasting Room.
Sierra Ridge Vineyard and Winery
Sierra Ridge Vineyard and Winery located at 14110 Ridge Road, Sutter Creek also offers wines for tasting at the Sutter Creek tasting Room. The 150 acre vineyard produces only 3,500 cases annually and sells its grapes to winemakers throughout the US. Sutter Ridge prides itself on producing high quality, unpretentious wine. Weddings are also held at Sierra Ridge Vineyard and Winery.
Sierra Ridge produces wines from 23 grape varietals. Here are some of the Sierra Ridge wines that we tasted at the Sutter Creek Tasting Room:
Given that the Sutter Creek Tasting Room represents three wineries it offers lots of diversity in the tasting of wines produced in the Sierra Foothills AVA. In one visit you get an overview of the wines produced in this region.

Sutter Creek is a great place to begin our wine adventure. To adequately explore the Sierra Foothills Wine Country you will need at least a week. The good news is that you will find a variety of charming bed and breakfasts and historic inn type accommodations in Sutter Creek. There is a good selection of restaurants in Sutter Creek and nearby.
You will have lots of fun exploring Sierra Foothills wineries, which are found in the counties of Amador, Calaveras and El Dorado. Sierra Foothills American Viticultural Area has 1,700 acres of its 2,700 acres planted with Zinfandel, with the remainder being mainly Rhone and Italian varietals. I invite you to join me in my travels in Sierra Foothills Wine Country and elsewhere to search for the best in Spaswinefood.
