Cancún, Mexico is a perfect beach and spa getaway

CancúnQuintana Roo is a perfect beach and spa getaway. When we arrived in Cancún it also signaled the beginning of the Mayan Riviera. In fact the Mayan Riviera originally was called the Canún to Tulum Corridor. The Mayan Rivieria is famous for its large scale resorts however, you will also find boutique hotels, great restaurants and spas. During our road trip down Mexico's east coast Cancún was our first stop in Quintana Roo. Spaswinefood just had to take the time to check out one of Mexico's top tourist attractions.

Cancún's great beaches and spas
If you are looking for great beaches and spas then Cancún, Mexico tops most list. Without a doubt it is one of Mexico's top tourist attractions. We were totally excited to be able to visit one of the premier beach and spa resort destinations in the world. USA News ranked Cancún as one of the top Mexican Beaches. It is on Frommer's list of best beach vacations. On the Travel Channel list of Top 10 Beach Resorts in Mexico, two are in Cancún (Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach and Le Meridien Cancún Resort and Spa).

If a Cancún beach and spa vacation is on your list then you must read Kelly McLaughlin's guide to Cancún and Mexican Riviera beaches. Yon can check out Tripadvisor's description of public beaches. There is also a discussion of best spa on Tripadvisor. Cancun Travel describes some special spa services unique to this area. These resources will help you plan a special beach and spa escape that is just perfect for you.

Cancún's accommodations and restaurants
Cancún is one of the premier spa resort destinations in the world. The result is it has so much to offer in terms of accommodations and restaurants. Most travelers to Cancún will find wonderful accommodations, at one of the many Cancún beach resorts. However, if you travel with a pet the search for a hotel can be more challenging. We were fortunate however to find pet friendly accommodations at the Holiday Inn Arenas. While the hotel is average by Cancún standards they were very pet friendly and we were quite pleased.

During our Cancún stay we were happy just to take in the beach scene near the hotel. Each morning we had breakfasts on the veranda overlooking the beach. We tried some domestic wines that were included with our hotel package but they were not the best. While the wines were not great the margaritas were quite good. The hotel has a spa service right on the beach. It is the perfect setting for a massage.

Things to see and do
Cancún has lots to see and do, such as fishing, golfing and much more (see All About CancunDestiantion 360 and Tripadivsor). You will never run out of Mayan ruins to explore from Mérida to Tulum. In fact we began our drive on the tolled highway from Mérida to CancúnQuintana RooIt was a perfect three and half hour drive. Sure, there were tollgates along the route, a few small towns and maybe one turn in the highway. The highway i s delightful to drive.

Getting to/from Cancún
Cancún International Airport is the second busiest in Mexico. You will have problem getting flights to and from major North American and European cities. Car rentals, taxis and shuttle services are easily available.

Health and safety in Mexico
Since healthy and safety is often concern for travelers to Mexico do not forget to check sources that provide good information such as Tripadvisor and USA Today. I also recommend that you check U.S. Department of State for the latest update before you travel.

Onto Playa del Carmen and the Mayan Riviera
We very much enjoyed Cancún. Next, it was onto Playa del Carmen for a week. Playa del Carmen is just an hours drive from Cancún. After two weeks on the road we decided to take a week to relax at the Mayan Palace on the Mayan Riviera. Check out my travels in Mexico and elsewhere at my travel column, or visit me at Spaswinefood
