The tale of a Grüner Veltliner

It may have been my first introduction to Grüner Veltliner. I must admit, I did not pay enough attention because there were so many other wines in the room. I tasted, took a picture and almost totally forgot the encounter. I did not make notes that night. Then one day a friend posted a picture of a white wine. I asked "What was in the glass?" She said "Grüner Veltliner." I checked a description of Grüner Veltliner. Then shortly afterwards I remembered that I had tasted a Grüner Veltliner at #EWBC BYOB Night in Izmir, Turkey. I tracked it down amongst my photos.

After finding the photo I knew I was on the right track. All I needed to do was to check with my Austrian wine blogger friends. They would know of the Schloss Maissau, Juliusberg Grüner Veltliner 2009. Soon I received the following note:

"It's from Austria's wine region "Weinviertel". The winery is Schloss Maissau. They produce only Grüner Veltliner from their 12ha of vineyards. It was a Magnum from 2009. This Grüner Veltliner is from the single vineyard "Juliusberg" and is categorized as "Weinviertel DAC Reserve". The soil of this single vineyard is weathered primary rock (granite). The soil gives the wine a beautiful minerality combined with a touch of blossom honey and exotic fruit as well as a hint of tobacco. It has a lively acidity and is an ideal companion for food. If you need more information, just let me know!"

Today's social media enables us to get us to get in touch with a source in the know quickly. Now all I have to do is find myself another bottle of Schloss Maissau, Juliusberg Grüner Veltliner 2009. You can check out other tales from my wine travels at Spaswinefood
