Antigua's Ruinas de San José el Viejo is magical

Ruinas de San José el Viejo, Antigua is a stunning setting for a special event. Valentines Day is a special time to celebrate with food and wine. No matter where our Spaswinefood travels takes us it is nice to do something special on that day. This year we attended a Valentines Dinner, which was hosted by Antigua's Rotary Club. Each year Antigua's Rotary Club holds a Valentines Dinner, as a fund raising project to support worthy causes. This year's event was held at the majestic Ruinas de San José el Viejo.

When we arrived the building was all light up. The accent lighting at night makes Ruinas de San José el Viejo look absolutely magical.

Today's Antigua, Guatemala, a world UNESCO Heritage site, is a popular spot for special events. The colonial architecture of Antigua is outstanding. This makes Antigua the perfect setting for many cultural and social activities throughout the year. During Spaswinefood's visits to Antigua we are fortunate to be able to attend events in such beautiful colonial settings, as Ruinas de San José el Viejo.

Valentines Day is a time to celebrate with ChampagneCavaProsecco and other sparkling wines. Although sparkling wines are usually white or Rosé there are some red sparkling wines as well. Whatever your choice of wine, sparkling or still,  it is nice to have special event to attend on Valentines Day.

From the wine choices available for dinner we chose Valtier Reserva 2004. You can check reviews at Risks physicistSnooth and verema. I would agree with Risks physicist who closed his review with the following comment: "This wine . . .  really good. However, his time is up, you can, at most, should be treated as a beverage education, if you want to know how it tastes stale wine (via google translation)." So the wine was not a hit for me but the evening was.

We enjoyed dinner with Antigua friends and we were served a great meal. The event was catered by Porta Hotel Antigua. Their staff provided excellent service and even accommodated this vegetarian on short notice. Special thanks to the chef and staff for a wonderful evening. There was also singing and music throughout the evening. Yes, there was time for dancing on this special occasion.

Ruinas de San José el Viejo is indeed a very special place. Antigua's colonial architecture offers a number perfect settings for special events throughout the year. This make Antigua perfect for " Valentines Day", or as it is most commonly said" Dia de San Valentino" (Latin America), "Dia del Amor y la Amistad" (in some parts of South America "Day of Love and Friendship") and in Guatemala "Dia del Cariño". Yes, there is a special magic at Ruinas de San José el Viejo. I look forward to writing about my other Antigua experiences at Spaswinefood, or you can visit my travel column at the Examiner
