Visiting Gülor Winery, Turkey

Last fall after two weeks of travel through Turkey we returned to Istanbul to join fellow wine bloggers for a tour of Thrace wineries. We were part of a group that had come to Turkey to experience Turkish wines first hand. Our pre-conference #EWBC activity was a two day trip to four wineries in the Thrace area. Spaswinefood was excited to visit Turkey because it is well known for its spectacular ruins. Turkey is also considered to be one of the original source of wines in the world. Southeastern Anatolia grape origins date back to 9000BC. Because of its wine history Turkey has been described as the "Heart of the Grand Terroir".  Given Turkey's rich wine history Turkish wines are a must for wine lovers.

The Turkish wine industry has undergone rebirth in the last 20 years. A New York Times article by Andrew Finkel, who attended the Izmir wine bloggers conference noted the growing enthusiasm for wine making in Turkey, as did the Gray ReportSpaswinefood experienced this same enthusiasm, not only at the conference, but first hand at Thrace wineries. In Thrace we visited both new and established boutique wineries and a larger well established winery. Since I have already published on visits to Doluca, Gali and Suvla wineries it is long overdue to post on my visit to Gülor Winery.

Our first stop on day two was at Gülor Winery. Gülor Winery is a well established boutique winery.

Gülor Winery was founded in 1993. The winery is owned by Guler Sabanci, third-generation female member of the well known Sabanci family. According to Wines of Turkey Gülor Winery was the first boutique wine producer in Turkey. Gülor Winery has also been credited with introducing international grapes into Turkey.

While at Gülor we were treated to tea and coffee.

The welcoming was followed by a wine tasting. The grapes used in Gülor's wine production come from its 20-hectare vineyard.

At Gülor Winery we tasted six wines 1) Sauvignon Blanc 2012 that had been bottled three months ago, 2) A blend of 65% O and 35% Malbec 2011 3) Malbec 2010 4) Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Sangiovese (30%) 2010 5) Malbec,  Petit Verdot and Merlot 2009 and finally a mystery blend 6) Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were two of the wines we identified in the mystery blend. These samples provided me with an introduction to the wines being produced from international grape varieties at Gülor. Vinography provided notes on some Gülor wines he tasted at #EWBC12.

While it was a short visit to Gülor Winery I did appreciate to be able to see this winery and sample some of their wines. I look forward to tasting more Gülor wines in the future. Check out my travels in Turkey and elsewhere at Spaswinefood
