It was so amazing to discover Rueda DO wines

Spaswinefood is always excited to discover wines from a new wine region. So naturally I welcomed the opportunity to taste Spanish wines from Rueda DO at #WBC13 in Penticton, British Columbia. Rueda Denominación de Origen (DO) is one of the white wine regions of Spain. The DO is northwest of Madrid, centered around Reuda, with the Duero River flowing east to west across the flat high plains. In fact some have described Rueda (DO) as the leading white wine of Spain. This makes wines from Reuda DO an amazing discovery.

Rueda is an ancient wine region that was re-born in mid 1970's.  Major credit for this happening goes the Rioja winery De Marqués De Riscal. Riscal well known for its red wines was looking for a wine region where they could produce a white wine. Riscal settled on Reuda and the verdejo grape. This proved to be a success for Riscal and other wineries followed. The result is the Reuda DO has become well known for the primary white wine variety Verdejo, with other authorized whites being Viura and Sauvignon Blanc. The authorized red wine varieties are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Garnacha. The region was granted DO status in 1980, with rosé and reds added in 2008. There are many wine styles produced, with each style getting its own back label.

There was an excellent variety of Rueda DO wines available for tasting during the #WBC13 International wine tasting event.

One the Rueda wines I tasted was from Bodegas Herederos De Marqués De Riscal. Given De Marqués De Riscal importance to this region their wines are obviously not to be missed at any Reuda DO wine tasting.

Yes, that evening was an excellent introduction to Rueda (DO) wines. If you are looking for a refreshing white wine that pairs well with many foods give Reuda DO wines a try. You will discover some great wines at reasonable prices. This makes Reuda Do wines an amazing discovery for me.

Spaswinefood is so looking forward to continuing the Spanish wine journey at the Digital Wine Communications Conference in Rioja, Spain October 24-27, 2013. While the conference will be in Rioja I will get the opportunity to taste wines from other regions of Spain. I have been most fortunate this year to have tasted Rueda DO wines at #WBC13 In Penticton, British Columbia.  Check out my travels in Spain, such as discovering Málaga wines in Mijas, and elsewhere at Spaswinefood
