Enroute to Rioja and what a food and wine welcome to Madrid

Most likely when you think of food and wine in Madrid you might imagine a gastronomical feast.  Our first Spaswinefood stop in enroute to Rioja, Spain is Madrid. We have come to Spain for a #DWCC wine adventure in Rioja, listed as one of top ten places to visit in 2013 by Wine Enthusiasts. For our Madrid stopover we booked an hotel near the airport in Barajas. After we checked into the hotel, relaxed a little, we decided on a late lunch. The shuttle bus driver had recommended Campanilla Restaurante when he dropped us off at the hotel. We thought fine, let us check out Campanilla.

We expected a casual restaurant but definitely not the welcoming we experienced at Restaurante Campanilla. Upon arrival we were greeted by Pepe, the owner. "Yes, no problem", he said they cater to vegetarians too. Soon Pepe was mixing us a Sangria. Why not?  After all, it is the middle of the afternoon in Madrid. Pepe mixed us what he described as a light sangria to go with lunch. Later, at the end of the meal, he gave recipes for all types of Sangrias, including one made with champagne.

We did not want a dessert but, Pepe still brought us some sweets.

He also brought us gifts, caps with Madrid written on them.

When he discovered we were on our way to Rioja he gave us tips for good vegetarian dishes to look for in Rioja. We have the list and will check out his suggestions.

Later, when I checked Tripadvisor, I was not surprised that Campanilla Restaurante got great reviews.

Of course we are off to explore the gastronomy of Rioja. An article by Gabriella Opaz explores the rich diversity of food in this awesome wine region. No #winelover visit to Spain is complete without going to Rioja. If you are looking for suggestions on hotels on the Rioja wine route see Rick Fisher's article. I invite you to join me in my travels in Spain and elsewhere in search of the best in Spaswinefood.
