Athens, one of the world's top travel destinations, is perfect for #winelover adventures. While Athens is commonly a place where visitors come to explore archaeological ruins our #winelover group came to explore the wines. Some of these explorations took us to Athens wine bars. Actually we began our 4th anniversary #winelover celebrations at Scala Vinoteca Restaurant, a wine bar/restaurant where the modern wine bar/restaurant movement in Athens began.
Scala Vinoteca is for #Winelovers
On the first evening we met for a BYOB Celebration Dinner at Scala Vinoteca Restaurant in the heart of Athens. It was a perfect spot to kickoff for our #winelover 4th anniversary celebrations in Greece.

It is always special when #winelovers come together.

The wines and the food were delightful. However, what was even more exciting was seeing #winelover friends and meeting new #winelover friends.
BYOB Celebration Dinner
Scala's Mediterranean inspired menu gets great reviews. Some of the dishes served that evening included:

But, of course there was dessert.

In our case because it was a BYOB event we did not sample from Scala's wine list. They have a great list of Greek and international wines. One of the Greek wines shared by winelovers that evening included:

One of the non-Greek wines shared was a wine from Tokal.

Given that we visited the wine bar in the winter we did not get to experience their outdoor dining patio. It should be lovely in season. I would so love to return to Scala Vinoteca Restaurant. Hanging out with #winelover friends at Scala Vinoteca, Athens was absolutely priceless.
Athens Wine Bars
Of course Athens has many wine bars. Three more wine bars that I visited while in Athens were Cinque, Fabrica de Vino and Vintage.
Vintage Wine Bar and Bistro

The Vintage Wine Bar and Bistro is an ideal place to sample from a wide range of Greek wines. I am happy to say that our program included two visits to the Vintage Bar and Bistro. Given that Vintage is a combination of a wine bar and a bistro, this makes it ideal for exploring wine and food. The first time we did a wine and cheese tasting. Later that evening we returned for dinner served with Greek wines from various regions.
Fabrica de Vino

Fabrica de Vino is wine bar that gets good reviews and is certainly well worth a visit.
Cinque Wine Bar

Cinque Wine Bar however, which also gets good reviews was extra special for me. Maybe, it was the #winelover connection, a sense of community, which made Cinque more special for me. One thing I have learned is that it is important to be part of a community. If you drop by these Athens wine bars you will find not only a place to explore wines but also a sense of community.

Yes, you too can discover that special #winelover magic in Greece. Whether you are newbie to Greek wines, or already a seasoned Greek #winelover, Athens is perfect for wine explorations. Sure, while you are in Athens checkout the ruins. However do not forget make it a wine and food adventure. I look forward to writing about other Greek #winelover experiences at Spaswinefood, or you can visit my travel column at the Examiner.
