San Telmo, Buenos Aires the heart of tango culture

We could not resist, even on a hot Sunday in February, returning to San Telmo to checkout its tango, antique and street markets (Feria de San Telmo), and feel those tango vibes. Buenos Aires was the final destination on our recent Spaswinefood adventure in Argentina. Some call Buenos Aires the Paris of South America. It is definitely that and much more. It is after all the city of tango.

On that very hot day we escaped the heat whenever possible. Yes, standing in the shade under the trees around Plaza Dorrego helped.

San Telmo: Tango, Antique and Street Markets, and Street Performers
I so loved returning to San Telmo. During an earlier trip I remember watching some tango dancers near the plaza. San Telmo, the oldest barrio in Buenos Aires, experienced a revival of tango in the 1960's. It is considered to be the heart of tango culture.

When we arrived there was a tango dance in-progress. We stopped to view the performance.

I just wanted to escape the heat however, here I was observing a tango dance on a hot summer's day in Buenos Aires.

Seven years earlier I took photos of tango dancers at the same location. When I saw the male dancer this time I had an instance flashback. I do believe that he maybe the same tango dancer in my earlier photo.

I believe this to be the case because he has a physical resemblance to the male person in my earlier photo. He also is wearing a similar ring on his left hand.

If you desire to see more tango just wait until the antique vendors leave Plaza Dorrego at the end of the day. It is here that San Telmo's La Milonga del Indio comes to life at dusk. For something less touristy perhaps, check out Tangodrómo at the Culture Center on Plaza Defensa. You will also find tango shows in San Telmo and throughout the city.

After viewing the tango dancing, listening to the music, and checking out the antique vendors at Plaza Dorrego we continued on down Defensa. Sundays on Defensa, from San Juan to Plaza de Mayo, is the site of the Feria de San Telmo (Street Market). Along the street you will find vendors selling crafts, food, and more. There are also artists, dancers and other performers. Passing the street performers is always entertaining. We passed a performer who was focused on reacting some the works of Carlos Gardel, a French Argentine, one of the most prominent figures in the history of tango.

The further you walk the more street entertainment you encounter. Each performer offers further insights into San Telmo.

This time we also checked out some of the interesting architecture and shops along the route.

Overall, we just took our time to explore San Telmo, which meant we did a lot of walking.

Despite the heat we had a most delightful day in San Telmo. San Telmo, Buenos Aires is indeed the homeland of tango culture. Tango, antique and street markets, and street performers all bring that culture to life. Before visiting San Telmo Spaswinefood also did some research on the local restaurants. That day we dined at Brasserie PetanqueI invite you to join me in my travels in Argentina and elsewhere at Spaswinefood.
