Hanging out with friends at Dr. Loosen's

Recently, I had the pleasure to hang out with friends at Dr. Loosen's winery in Bernkastel, Germany. Dr. Loosen Riesling is something I had heard about well before our Mosel Valley arrival. Our final stop, at the end of our first day touring the Middle Mosel, was Weingut Dr. Loosen. Here, we would not only got to taste Dr. Loosen Riesling, and other Mosel Valley wines, but also hangout with friends. This family winery has existed for over 200 years. Since 1988 Ernst Loosen, winemaker and owner, has managed the winery. When #winelovers met for their 3rd Annual #Winelover Riesling Marathon Dr. Loosen was on our list. Oh, yes! We did meet Ernst.

Hanging Out with Friends at Dr. Loosen
After a day of Mythos Mosel wine tasting we arrived at Dr. Loosen winery. We had a stand-up dinner, and tasted more wines, some of these were vintage Rieslings.

As we walked those final steps to Dr. Loosen we knew that we were in for a special evening.

Our welcoming drink was an Ayala Champagne from the Ay region of Champagne.

Amongst the wines I tasted that evening included the following list:

I would love to discuss all the wines available for tasting however, for now I will share one of the older vintages.

Tasting vintage Riesling, and hanging out at Dr. Loosen that evening there was a sense of excitement. After all, we had come to explore Riesling at its best.

I loved discussing with fellow #winelovers the wines that we were tasting.

Besides the fantastic wine list, there was stand up dinner that evening, catered by Kate & Kon.

The great wines and delicious party food made it the perfect finale for our first Mythos Mosel day.

During our Dr. Loosen visit I could not resist observing the estate vineyard.

Just before sunset #Winelover Fabien Lane was busy flying a drone to take pictures of the estate vineyard.

Earlier we had discovered an installation in the courtyard. Since my #winelover friends are naturally curious they had to check it out.

I soon realized that it was the perfect opportunity to take a few photos.

As the sun went down that late spring evening, it was time to savor those moments.

After a very rich Riesling filled day it was time to head back to Staffelter Hof to rest for the next day.

Hanging Out at Dr. Loosen
When we returned to the winery the next day out came Ernst Loosen to greet us. I have since discovered that Ernst, who was fascinated by the Roman ruins on the family estate, originally began his university studies in archeology. Later his passion shifted to wine making, he then threw himself into studying oenology, and visiting wine regions around the world. His philosophy of wine making is a balance between old and new. He takes a minimalist intervention approach to wine making.

We were most fortunate to be greeted by Ernst when we dropped by the winery, the morning after the dinner party.

As usual fellow #winelovers just had to get a photo with the winemaker.

Our #winelover friend and photographer extraordinaire, Bernado asked Ernst to pose with us. I know he captured images.

Of course, it was the perfect opportunity for me to capture some of those moments shared.

A wonderful evening, and a return visit the next day to Dr. Loosen certainly put me in touch with this well known brand.

Indeed I loved the opportunity to hangout at Dr. Loosen during the Mythos Mosel. It was the perfect opportunity to experience a wide range of Riesling wines. This post is part of a series on Spaswinefood’s travels in the Mosel Valley. I would like to thank Jan Matthias Klein for hosting and organizing this #winelover event. I invite you to join me in my travels in the Mosel Valley, Germany and elsewhere at Spaswinefood.
