I started a new blog Wine Travels with Dr. Sharon on January 1, 2022 below is the introduction that I posted.
Wine Travels with Dr. Sharon
Welcome to my blog Wine Travels with Dr. Sharon. The joy of learning for me is a life long pursuit. I was an academic in the Bay Area before becoming involved in wine. Driving overland 2009-10, from Deadhorse, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina on Las Américas Trip, led me in a new direction. I returned to North America summer of 2010 with an interest in spas – wine – food. So July 2010, thinking I wanted to do something on spas- wine – food, I started blogging at Spaswinefood. My focus has shifted to primarily wine travels. Now, over 10 years later, I am excited to embark on new adventures centered on wine travels.
Since 2010 I have been based half of the year in Antigua, Guatemala, and the other half stateside. Wether in Guatemala, or in the US traveling for me has centered around wine. My travels have lead me to the wine regions of Argentina (Cafayate, Mendoza, San Juan, Salta and Patagonia), Australia (Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Granite Belt, Hunter Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Margaret River, Mudgee, New England, Orange and Yarra Valley), Bulgaria, Chile (Casablanca Valley, Cholchagua Valley and Maipo Valley), Canada (Okanagan Valley), Georgia, Greece, Germany (Mosel), France (Champagne, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Provence and Tavel), Italy (Alto Adige, Chianti Classico, Franciacorta and Sicily), Portugal (Algarve, Douro, Madeira), Serbia, Romania, South Africa (Constantia, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Klein Karoo and Stellenbosch), Spain (Malaga, Navarra, Ribera del Duero, Rioja and Rueda), Switzerland (Valais), Turkey and United States (Arizona, California, Idaho, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, Texas, Oregon, and Washington), and Uruguay (Canelones, Montevideo, Maldonado). Through my writing I will continue to explore these regions and beyond.
My travels in Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Romania, Serbia, and Turkey have made me aware of a growing interest in wines made with native grape varieties. Whereas wine travels to Virginia and Texas have left me grape--fully surprised by the increasing use of native grapes in North America. Sure international grape varieties are the most popular; however, increasing in the US American hybrid grapes are playing a greater role.
I look forward to making discoveries through wine travels, ventures off the wine roads where other vine-filled experiences will sometimes take center stage, as well as learnings from wine events, and connections by exploring special topics. I am happy to share my vine-filled adventures with my husband, John Matson. Special thanks go to groups, such as #Winelover, Digital Wine Bloggers Conference (European Wine Bloggers Conference), Wine Media Conference (Wine Bloggers Conference), and others, which inspired, and continue to inspire me on this wine journey around the world. I invite you to join me in the sharing of these adventures at Wine Travels with Dr. Sharon and Spaswinefood on Twitter and Facebook.
CHEERS!
