Pan, Mas Pan Por Favor: Wonderful Artisan Bread In La Antigua, Guatemala

No matter if you are spending a day or months in La Antigua, Guatemala you need to sample some of its wonderful artisan breads. To buy artisanal bread in Antigua you often need to visit several places if you want to stock up for a few days. In this post I will take you on a "bread" trip around Antigua.

On my walk to buy bread, San José El Viejo is the first ruins I pass. No matter where you walk in Antigua, you are most likely to pass a ruins, such as San José El Viejo. Antigua is a colonial town, so like most colonial towns in Latin America all the streets run north/south (avenidas) and east/west (calles) from the the central plaza.

Doña Luisa
My first stop is north of the plaza at the Doña Luisa Xioctencatl Restaurant and Bakery (Panderia y Pasteleria) on 4a Calle Oriente #12. It  is one of the best places in town to buy bread and baked goods.

As soon as you walk in the door you smell that wonderful smell of freshly baked goods. Two of my favorite purchases are whole wheat bread (pan integral) and banana bread (pan de banana).

Epicure
Next, I head to 6a Avenida Norte where I stop first at Epicure. Epicure at 6a Avenida Norte is a Charcuterie and Delicatessen that sells meats, salads, some grocery items and baked goods. At Epicure you need to order in advance or go there early to buy baked goods. Their baked goods are so popular that they often sell out before they leave the oven.

Epicure also has a restaurant at 3Avenida Norte #11B where you can also check for baked goods. The restaurant serves produce from Epicure's own finca.

I like to buy bake goods at Epicure because the quality is excellent. I especially like their croissants simples (plain croissants) and breads. Their sweets are good too.

El Viejo Café
From Epicure I continue my walk south on 6a Avenida to 3a Calle to El Viejo Cafe. El Viejo Café is located at 3a Calle Poniente #12.

El Viejo Café has a french bakery. There I like to buy their baguettes, cinammon buns, and coissants. Again, arrive early before things sell out.

Antigua Bakeries
Around town there are quite a few artisanal bakeries. Each bakery has something wonderful to offer.

Yes, tortillas too; so it is onto 3a Avenida to the tortilla shop.

I head back each time with my treasures to enjoy later.
