A Honduran Culinary Gem: Hacienda San Lucas, Copan Ruinas

Copan Ruinas, Honduras is known for its Mayan archaeological site. While many people visit Honduras to see this wonderful UNESO site, I went to Honduras March 6-8, 2011 on a culinary trip.  I was excited to return to Honduras because of a memorable dining experience we had at Hacienda San Lucas several years ago.

Hacienda San Lucas is located 3km. from Copan Ruinas. It serves authentic country cuisine prepared by Maya Chortí staff. Some of the food is prepared in a rustic, open kitchen. The good news is if you happen to visit on a day that they are preparing traditional foods you can watch the food preparation process.

After a 5-6 hour drive from Antigua, Guatemala we arrived at Hacienda San Lucas late afternoon. The timing of our arrival was perfect because it allowed us to relax before dinner.

Meals at Hacienda San Lucas are served on the patio, which has a beautiful view of the valley. As the sun goes down candles are lit, making it the perfect setting for dinner.

Coffee is ready in the kitchen when you get up in the morning.  Early mornings are great for bird watching. We saw some wonderful birds in the early morning. We were especially excited to see the mot mot and parrots.

Those early risers can simply enjoy coffee or just read a book while breakfast is being prepared.

Hacienda San Lucas's website showcases  ticucos and tamales de viaje. Check out this Ticucos  recipe and tamales de viaje video. Tamales de viaje has been described as a gourmet tamale. Its ingredients include corn, olive oil and carrots.

During our visit one of the dinner entreés on the second evening was shrimp. The entreé was followed by brownie and ice cream for dessert.

If you plan to visit Copan Ruinas and you a looking for a relaxing stay in a beautiful historic hacienda setting, with great cuisine, then I would highly recommend Hacienda San Lucas.  Tripadvisor reviewers give it top marks.  Hacienda San Lucas's Cuisine is very special. It is a Honduran Culinary Gem.
