Our journey through Málaga
wine country began in the picturesque village of Mijas. In Mijas we visited the
Mijas Wine Museum (Museo del Vino de Mijas). One of wines included in
our tasting was a red wine from Bodegas Cortijo Los Aguilares, Ronda. We particularly liked their
Pago El Espino 2008. The wine is a blend of Petit Verdot, Tempranillo and
Merlot. We were told about their award winning Pinot Noir. I had also read
about the bodega’s Pinot Noir when I researched Málaga wineries.

During our Museo del Vino
de Mijas visit the person pouring our wine suggested we visit the winery in
Ronda. The fact that the winery had nice wines, a scenic location and a female wine
maker convinced us that we should make the journey to Ronda. Next morning, we
journeyed down the Mediterranean coastal highway (AP-7) to take highway N-397
to Ronda. Our journey from the coast to the historic city of Ronda was through scenic mountains. Soon
we arrived in Ronda and located the highway to the winery.

Help me Ronda
As we always do in new
areas, we checked the directions at a gas station. We were so happy to discover
that the winery was just down the highway.

Soon we were at the winery gate.

Also, too soon I was to discover that we should have called ahead to make an
appointment. I rang the buzzers but there was no answer. Yes, help me Ronda.

Oh, Yes! On the way back
down the mountain highway we discovered another wine from Bodegas Cortijo Los Aguilares. Above all, we were happy to have discovered Ronda's wine route. We need to return to explore Ronda and its wines.

All was not lost. After
all, we had tasted Bodegas Cortijo Los Aguilares wine in Mijas and at least saw
the winery’s location. Yes, that evening
for dinner we drank a bottle Pago El Espino 2008.

Málaga and Sierras de
Málaga are the two Spanish Denominaciones de Origen
(DO) in the province of Málaga. Wine-Searcher notes that Málaga DO
was established in 1933, with Sierras de Málaga DO added in 2001. I
invite you to join me in my travels in Málaga,
Spain and elsewhere in search of the best in Spaswinefood.
