For a #winelover no visit to the province of Málaga, Spain is complete without checking out its wines. In fact this week was
a perfect opportunity for Spaswinefood to
check out the wines produced in this region of Spain. Our first opportunity to do wine tasting of Málaga wines was in the picturesque village of Mijas. In Mijas our first stop was the Mijas Wine Museum (Museo del Vino de Mijas).

Spanish Wines described the
province of Málaga’s wine history. It is important to note that Málaga and
Sierras de Málaga are the two Spanish Denominaciones de Origen (DO) in the province
of Málaga. According to Wine-Searcher Málaga DO was
established in 1933, with Sierras de Málaga DO added in 2001. This
area’s wines are produced from grape varieties, such as Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez ( also known locally as Pedro Ximén). I was
particularly interested in tasting wines produced from these grapes.

While visiting the Mijas Wine Museum Spaswinefood was excited to sample a few wines from some of the local
wineries.

1. Bodegas
Gomara's dry white white, Seco Gomara. This wine is made 100% Pedro Ximénez grape. It makes a great drink to go with an appetizer.

2. From Bodegas Antonio Muñoz Cabreras a white wine that I tasted was a dry Moscatel, Blanco 2 from the Sierra De Málaga DO. I liked the taste of this particular Moscatel.

3. My third white wine was from Bodegas
Malaga Virgen. It was a sweet white wine, Moscatel, Reserva De
Familia. This wine makes a perfect desert.
4. From Bodegas Los Aguilares we tried one of their red wines. Bodegas Cortijo Los Aguilares is located in
Rhonda. We
particularly liked the Pago El Espino 2008. The wine is a blend of Petit Verdot,
Tempranillo and Merlot. We were also told about their award winning Pinot Noir.

While at the wine museum we did taste other excellent red wines from other regions of Spain. However, it was a special treat for me to be introduced to some of the wines from Málaga and Sierras de Málaga, two Spanish Denominaciones de Origen (DO) in the province of Málaga. For me it was especially exciting to taste new wines produced from the Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez grapes.
Should your travels include Málaga, Spain put Mijas on your list. I invite you to join me in my travels in Spain and elsewhere in search of the best in Spaswinefood. You may also visit my travel column at the Examiner.
