Market days in small Moroccan towns offer many unique experiences that make for an interesting visit. Most travelers to Morocco will often visit the medinas of Fez and Marrakech. While the Fez and Marrakech medinas are not to be missed it is equally worthwhile to visit during a market day in a small town. Many of Morocco’s market places not visited by tourists can be both fascinating and a great introduction to everyday Moroccan life. During our recent travels through Morocco our guide decided to make an impromptu stop at a local market along the route. We all thought that it was such a good idea to visit a non-touristy market.
Market day discoveries in a small Moroccan town
The morning after our overnight adventure in the Sahara Desert at Merzouga we continued onto the Todra Gorge Canyon. Fortunately our guide asked if we would like to check out market day in a small town along the route. We all agreed and so the next town along our route is where we stopped. Even though it was early to mid-morning the market was already busy with activity. Some of the market goers were dining at the food counters set up in the market area. Throughout the market there were food stalls with fruit, vegetables, grains, spices, cooking oils and meats at mobile butcher shops.

There was livestock for sale. There were many other items for sale such as, hardware, clothing, cooking utensils and so on the list goes.
What caught my attention during our walk through the market is that there were trucks completely filled with vegetables, such as onions and squash. We were told that these trucks would often travel from one market day to another until the farmers sold their truckload of vegetables.

The above photos captured some of the happenings at the market that we visited. Moroccan market places are indeed wonderful places to discover something about the common foods available in a local area. It certainly adds credence to buy fresh, local produce.
Just by dropping into market day we were able to catch a glimpse into everyday life happenings in a small Moroccan town. It is without doubt that Moroccan market days are amongst the most interesting in the world. I invite you to join me in my travels in Morocco and elsewhere in search of the best in Spaswinefood.
