Our #Africa14 overland travels took us to Dar Es Salaam, the largest and richest city in Tanzania. Before arriving in Dar Es Salaam the highlight of our Spaswinefood adventure was a visit to Serengeti-Ngorongoro Biosphere Reserve. After we left Mto Wa Mbu (our pre and post Serengti stopover) we journeyed back to Arusha. From Arusha we headed 270 km. south towards Kilimanjaro. Our overland truck, climbed high onto the slopes of
Kilimanjaro to the village of Marangu. That night our campsite was at the Marangu Hotel, a beautiful
turn-of-the-century farmhouse on 12 acres of relaxing tropical gardens. We took advantage of the opportunity to upgrade and stayed in the Marangu Hotel. The hotel also has a great bar and pool. Next day it was a long day's drive to Dar Es Salaam.
Dar Es Salaam
It seems but a dream that we were actually in Marangu, at the base of Kilimanjaro. We were so close, yet so far away. Here are some photos that were taken looking back towards Kilimanjaro, as we left. Still, when you are on an overland journey through east Africa to even catch a glimpse of Kilimanjaro is indeed very special.
Prior to our arrival in Dar Es Salaam we encountered dense traffic. It was bumper to bumper traffic by the time we entered the city. Traveling through Tanzania's largest city during peak traffic is indeed an adventure. Fortunately, we had a great overland truck driver who negotiated our way through the city to our campsite. During our visit to the Dar Es Salaam we stayed on the South Coast of Dar Es Salaam at Kipepeo Beach Village.
Enroute to the South Coast of Dar Es Salaam we passed busy streets. Vendors selling their wares lined the sidewalks on both sides of the street.
Finally, we arrived at Kipepeo Beach Village on the South Coast of Dar Es Salaam. Lonely Planet describes this beach resort and its location quite well. See also Frommer's and Tripadvisor description of this budget resort, which has a great beach side location. We decided not to camp but upgraded to a beach hut at Kipepeo Beach Village. Late arrivals and early morning departures during our overland travel often did not make it appealing for us to put up a tent. We did however, participate in cooking and dish washing activities as usual. During our Dar Es Salaam stay there was plenty of time for adventures but not much time for spas, food and wine.
After our Zanzibar stay we returned to Dar Es Salaam for a night.
Upon returning to Dar Es Salaam ferry terminal we re-traced our journey back to catch the ferry to the South Side of Dar Es Salaam. Finally, we arrived back at the Kipepeo Beach Village for our last night in Dar Es Salaam.
Our final night's stay at Kipepeo Beach Village, South Coast of Dar Es Salaam concluded our adventures in and around Dar Es Salaam. After a good night’s rest at Kipepeo Beach Village we would rise early next morning to travel to Iringa, Southern Highlands of Tanzania. For the next two days there would be long days on the road, as we journeyed to Malawi.

Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar and Onwards
Despite a late evening arrival it was an early rise next morning for our travels into Dar Es Salaam. We need to travel to the terminal where we would catch the ferry to Zanzibar. First, we our overland truck took us to a ferry terminal on the south side. There we caught a ferry into Dar Es Salaam. This was followed by a taxi ride through Dar Es Salaam to another ferry terminal. There we took a larger ferry to Zanzibar.
