Tweets during Dry Creek Valley Wine Region's Passport Weekend was my introduction to Kokomo Winery. The tweets convinced me to put Kokomo on Spaswinefood's list of must visit Northern Sonoma County wineries. Kokomo is one of over 80 wineries in Dry Creek Valley. This wine region is one of the three appellations along the Wine Road. The winery was founded in 2004 by Erik Miller, owner/winemaker. Miller's winery partner is Randy Peters, a fourth generation farmer who grows grapes in Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast AVAs. Miller and Peters, together with other members, make up the winery's team. Kokomo's goal is to produce wines that are food friendly. In my opinion they have met that goal.
The boutique winery is housed in the Timber Crest Farms facility. The building is brightly painted and there are picnic tables and flowers at the entrance to the tasting room and winery. The laid back setting creates a relaxed atmosphere to explore Kokomo's wines in the tasting room or with a picnic lunch.
Tasting Kokomo Wines
During our Kokomo visit we tasted the following five wines:
1. Kokomo, Pauline's Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley, Grenache Rosé 2013
2. Kokomo, Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley, Sauvignon Blanc 2013
3. Kokomo, Peters Vineyard, Russian River Valley, Chardonnay 2011
4. Kokomo, Gopher Block, Peters Vineyard, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2012
5. Kokomo, Dry Creek Valley, Zinfandel 2012
6. Kokomo, Cuvée Red Wine 2012
Clearly the five Kokomo wines that I tasted lived up to the tweets. In particular the Cuvée Red Wine 2012 was quite special. I also liked their Grenache Rosé 2013. These wines were amongst our purchases, which we had later with dinner. If you are interested in what others have said about Kokomo's wines check out the The Drunken Cyclist. You will find reviews of Kokomo Winery by winery visitors at Yelp. Tim Fish, Wine Spectator has described Kokomo, as a producer to watch. For wine reviews see CellarTracker, Food & Beverage, James The Wine Guy's video, Moms Who Need Wine, Prince of Pinot (reviews of Pinot Noirs), Wine Spies and Snooth. Kokomo's Press Page also provides a list of their award winning wines. For an overview of the history of wine making at Kokomo check out Snooth.
Yes, it was twitter that first introduced me to this Northern Sonoma County winery. Kokomo's wines are not-to-be missed. If your travels take you to Northern Sonoma County put Kokomo Winery on your list of wineries to visit along the Wine Road. I invite you to join me in my travels in California and elsewhere in search of the best in Spaswinefood.
