Margaret River Region's first vineyard and winery, Vasse Felix, was established in 1967. Western Australia's best-known wine region, the Margaret River Region, is located just 275 km drive south of Perth. What is so special about this wine region, is that it produces 20% of Australia’s premium wines. Wine enthusiasts will find this compact wine region easy to explore. It is just 110 km, from Busseltown at the north end, to Augusta at the south end. Vases Felix, of course, is a must visit.

Vasse Felix, Margaret River Wine Region
Since Dr. Tom Culity planted the first commercial vineyard at Vasse Felix the number of wine cellars has grown. Today the region is home to over 215 wine producers, with over 95-cellar doors (tasting rooms). The most common white grape varietals include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon whereas the most common red grape varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz. These cellar doors range from amazing architectural designs to rustic sheds. Spaswinefood was thrilled to visit this wine region, especially the historic Vasse Felix.

Absolutely no visit to Margaret River is complete without checking out Vasse Felix. Vasse Felix's Cellar Door does wines well. From their Classic White and Red wines to their Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz, the wines were indeed impressive.

Margaret River, Western Australia's best-known wine region, is also a culinary hotspot. What makes the Margaret River wine region such a culinary hotspot is that it is home to over 30 wineries with a restaurant. The restaurant at Vasse Felix winery is a must. In fact, right after a delightful wine tasting at Vasse Felix we ate lunch upstairs in their restaurant.
Dining at Vasse Felix Restaurant
Vasse Felix is not only one of Western Australia’s top wineries but also it has one of its top restaurants. Vasse Felix's spectacular restaurant has a prefect setting for dining. We had a table with great view overlooking the vineyard and the sculpture walk.

After a wine tasting it was not difficult to decide on which wines to select for lunch. However, if you would like to explore their wines further, the wine list does include some library wines.

Vase Felix is not just Margaret River's first vineyard and winery, it is also a gastronomic delight. Put Vasse Felix on your must visit list. Foodies will fall in love with this wine region, with over 30 wineries with a restaurant. You will also find a wide range of restaurants throughout the area. Margaret River chefs use the best local ingredients to prepare dishes that compliment the local vintages. While Spaswinefood was in Margaret River we so enjoyed sampling the local cuisine and wines. During our three-day stay we dined at a number of other Margaret River restaurants.
The Margaret River wine region is easily accessible by car, bus and train from Perth. Perth is served by domestic and international flights. There is so much to do and see in Margaret River. I invite you to join me in my travels in Western Australia and elsewhere at Spaswinefood.
