A Mosel Valley Welcome

Mosel Valley vineyards stretch for miles on both sides of the Mosel River, a tributary of the Rhine. Here in one of Germany's most beautiful river valleys, some of the best Riesling in the world is grown. When we met here for the 3rd annual #Winelover Riesling Marathon we had come to participate in the Mythos Mosel annual wine tasting event celebrating Mosel Riesling. Our #winelover event just happened to coincide with the Mythos Mosel held May 26-27, 2018 along the middle part of the Mosel River. The Mythos Mosel event included thirty tasting locations, which hosted wineries from other parts of the region. Our very first stop that weekend was at Staffelter Hof Vineyard.

When we met in Kröv at Staffelter Hof, a family run winery and guesthouse, our group included #winelovers from Germany, Greece, France, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, and United States.

As we gathered at Staffelter Hof, it was the perfect time to renew old friendships and make new ones.

After a welcoming sparkling Riesling it was off to the vineyards for a first look at this beautiful river valley. But, first let's take a closer look at what was in our glass.

True a closer look at this sparkling Riesling was needed. You know I did!

This spectacular landscape is home to lush, very steep vineyards. Winemaker Jan Matthias Klein, our host, explained future goals for Staffelter Hof, as they moves towards a biodynamic approach in the vineyard.

Standing there at Staffelter Hof vineyard we saw vineyards, as afar as the eye can see, along the banks of the Mosel River.

Whenever our #winelover community meets we always enjoy our vineyard time. This was no exception.

When we returned to Staffelter Hof guesthouse out came the vintage Riesling.

Darn it, that wine was so good. There is nothing like a vintage Riesling. What a welcome to the Mosel Valley it was. That special Mosel Valley evening included a BBQ and a BYOB. I will write more on the food and wine later. Over the weekend we would spend time discovering Mosel Valley wines, and extra special time with friends.

I was about to experience a #Winelover Mosel Riesling Marathon. Next day, we traveled the Mosel River via riverboat, and the second day we would hop on and off the bus. Over a two day period we tasted different styles of Riesling wines from different sites, and terroirs.

As we travelled along the Mosel River we would discover the postcard like towns for which the region is known. Wine-tasting is popular here, with the region hosting wine festivals spring through fall.

During the next two days we stopped at many host wineries where they were pouring wines from six wineries. Our first evening event was at Dr. Loosen, while our second evening was a Gala Dinner at a Kröv restaurant. We would soon discovery why Riesling is indeed the most popular grape here.

This post is first in a series that I will write on our #winelover adventures in the Mosel Valley. I would like to thank Staffelter Hof's winemaker, Jan Matthias Klein for hosting and organizing this amazing #winelover event. I invite you to join me in my travels in the Mosel Valley, Germany and elsewhere at Spaswinefood.
