December 7, 2010 we visited Sweet Mango, a restaurant at 1040 Willow Street, San Jose. Sweet Mango has a menu that offers Chinese and Burmese Cuisine. A restaurant that does both Chinese and Burmese Cuisine sounds interesting. I suspect most readers are familiar with Chinese Cuisine and less so with Burmese Cuisine; so a brief overview might be appropriate. Burmese cuisine is influenced by the three bordering countries of China, India and Thailand. Burmese cuisine therefore will have dishes that might appear to be Chinese, Indian or Thai. The dishes however are done in a unique Burmese way with differences in flavors, cooking techniques and with many regional variations. Three common ingredients in Burmese food are mango (fruit), pork (meat) and laphet leaves.

The Sweet Mango is attractively painted in a mango shade. It is decorated nicely with artwork and there are fresh flowers. There are also poinsettias for the holiday season.

After reading the menu the four of us ordered tea leaf (laphet) salad and hot and sour soup as appetizers.

All four of us enjoyed our dinner. We paid a corkage fee for a bottle of 2001 Pinor Noir
David Bruce that we brought for dinner. Even though the restaurant does offer a beer and wine service it is always plus when you can bring your own. I also liked the fact that you have a choice of brown or white rice with your meal.
The overall service was excellent. The two wait staff that served us were welcoming and provided us with the best of service right from the time we walked in the door. Reviews of this new restaurant are good.
Yelp gives it four stars (based on 73 reviews).
Metblog introduced the restaurant just before it opened in June, 2010.
I would definitely return to the Sweet Mango and maybe next time I will order some mango ice cream.
I invite you to join me in my travels in California and elsewhere at Spaswinefood, or you can visit my travel column at the Examiner.
