Historic Tier: What a welcome to the Mosel

After crossing into Southwestern Germany, historic Trier at the head of the scenic Mosel Valley, was . Trier, the oldest city in Germany, is historically rich. It was founded by the Celts in 4th century BC, conquered by the Romans 1st century BC, and steeped in medieval history. Today Trier is well known for its Roman and Medieval buildings. The day we left France's Champagne wine region we had an amazing lunch break in Metz, FranceFrom Metz we continued on towards the Luxembourg and Germany border. Upon crossing into Germany we travelled onto Trier, where we would spend a delightful Mosel Valley evening. Next morning, we did a walk through Trier's historical old city. What a welcome to the Mosel it was!

As we approached Trier that spring afternoon there were rain showers.

We arrived in Trier just before dinner. Our hotel had two restaurants, one casual and the other more formal. Since we did not have a dinner reservation we ended having a casual, but most delightful dinner. For dinner my friend and I ordered two simple entrees.

Yes, we tried one of the local beers. After all, it is Germany and you must try at least one beer.

Old City Trier
After a relaxing night in Trier we were ready for our #winelover adventure however, not before exploring Tier's Old City. We headed to the historical center where we found parking space, next door to the Basicilia of Constantine.

We passed crowds who had already gathered at Basilica of Constantine (Aula Palatine). Given the lineup we headed across the street.

It was early morning at the end of May, and already tourists were already arriving. We managed to keep our own distance from the crowds and explore on our own. After crossing the street, we headed down Palastraße towards Hauptmarkt (Main Market), which was the center of medieval Trier.

We passed the Hauptmarkt fountain and headed towards Trier Cathedral (Cathedral of St. Peter).

Nearby the cathedral was the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche). We did take a peek inside Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche).

While there was plenty to observe at the church, after a brief walk around, we were off. Not only are here are many Roman Catholic churches in Trier, but also Trier was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The Roman monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady put Trier on that list. To do justice to this UNESCO Heritage Site required more time than we could allot. Given we were due in Kröv by four o'clock that afternoon, with a planned stop at Eltz Castle, we did a quite walking tour only.

What follows are some of the sites we encountered on our quick walk through the Old City:

Rounding the corner we would take the walkway back. This allowed me to view a side door, as we passed.

After a wonderful early morning walk through the Old City, we headed back to the parking lot where our rental car was, and drove away. Even on a short walk there is much to see in Tier. Obviously, there many more historical sites to visit, such as Karl Marx house. Karl Marx, a German philosopher, and one of the founders of Marxism was born here. Not far from the historical old city is the historical Pfalzel, where you will find buildings and structures from the Roman Imperial Era.

Onwards Soon after leaving historic center of Trier, we crossed the Mosel River. Our plans before a late afternoon arrival in Kröv was to visit Eltz Castle.

Given we had a morning free for explorations, we decided to take a detour to the Eltz Castle (Burg Eltz), a medieval castleEltz Castle was the perfect prelude to an amazing Mosel Valley vine-filled adventure.

After the castle visit it was onto Staffelter Hof, Kröv for the 3rd Annual #Winelover Riesling Marathon.

What a welcome to the Mosel our fist day was! Trier, and Eltz Castle certainly set the stage for our Mosel Valley wine country travelsThis post is part of a series that I have written on our adventures in the Mosel Valley. I invite you to join me in my travels in the Mosel Valley, Germany and elsewhere at Spaswinefood.
